What’s the difference between a secular country and a religious one?

I go to Canada often and have visited in four provinces including Manitoba and British Columbia. Everywhere in Canada, people will tell you, “This is a very secular country.”
Tonight’s news makes me feel somewhat ashamed of our religious country:
