Tutu quotes Romans

I sometimes fuss about Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s sloppy theology, which has become a part of his shtick in recent years, but he gets it right more often than he gets it wrong (besides being perhaps the most heroic Christian of our time, for which he can be forgiven anything). Today’s New York Times quotes him in an article about the distressing outbreak of murderous violence against immigrants in South Africa:
“We human beings, ever since the Garden of Eden, are looking for scapegoats,” the Rev. Desmond Tutu, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, wrote in a regretful essay. “We remain children of Adam and Eve, and have the genes for looking for excuses.”
This is a statement of classic Biblical theology. See Genesis 2-3, Leviticus 16:20-22, and Romans 5:12-21.
