Death penalty: what company do you keep?

Amnesty International has just reported that there were 527 state-mandated executions around the world in 2010. Their numbers do not include China, which is believed to have executed thousands in secret. The worldwide leaders in executions are these: China, Iran, North Korea, Yemen, and the United States. (New York Times 3/30/11) What does this tell us about ourselves?
